For many people, a hospital’s A&E department can seem like the best place to go for any illness or injury, but often you can get more appropriate care from other services. Below you can find out what the Practice or local pharmacist can do for you.
For a number of minor illnesses or injuries, home can be the best place for you. For that reason, it’s important to have a well stocked first aid kit in the house to help you with anything from a cough/col, sore throat to a graze or small cut.
As well as cough medicines, paracetamol and anti-inflammatory tablets it is recommended that a suitable basic first aid kit would include these items, which can b e bought from your pharmacist:-
- antiseptic
- antihistamines
- indigestion remedies
- crepe bandages
- plasters
- anti-diarrhoea tablets
- a thermometer
Pharmacy
For minor infections, bites and stings, diarrhoea or a host of other minor ailments, pharmacists can provide expert advice and treatment under the ‘Feel Better Fast’ scheme.
Pharmacists are able to offer fully confidential advice with the confidence of years of professional training; wither offering help there and then, or telling you the best place to go for further care. Pharmacists are often the most suitable place for help, advice and treatment of minor issues.
Out Of Hours
The care and assistance available from the GP doesn’t end at 6pm. Through the night and at weekends, an out of hours service provides telephone advice and face-to-face appointments with a doctor where needed. If you need a GP when the practice is closed, call the practice on 0161 740 9864 and the GP Out of Hours number will be given out on the answer machine.
Accidents and Emergencies
The best place to go for serious life threatening conditions. Suspected strokes, chest pains or broken bones should all be seen at Accident & Emergency without delay.
However unnecessary visits to A&E make it harder for doctors and nurses working there to see patients with life-threatening conditions. When you go to Accident & Emergency, if the staff feel that there is a more appropriate place to get the best care, you will be redirected to that service.
